About Legum Lex

From the land of five rivers.

Punjab means five waters: rivers that have never asked whose fields they feed. Legum Lex is a technology company from that land, and carries its oldest idea into the law. What is good is good only when it reaches everyone.

Our roots

From Punjab, where everyone sits in the same row.

In every langar in Punjab, people sit side by side on the same floor and are served the same meal. No one is asked who they are, where they come from, or what they can pay.

Legum Lex grew up with that idea and carries it into the law. Whoever a case is about, in a village or a city, at home or abroad, deserves the same clear sight of it.

ਪੰਗਤ

Pangat The row in which everyone sits as an equal.

Our philosophy

Justice in plain sight, as the Constitution promised it.

The Constitution promises justice to every citizen, and equally. A promise kept only for those who can reach a court, spare its time and read its language is a promise half kept. Legum Lex believes technology can keep the other half, by putting the law where everyone can see it.

  • Preamble

    Justice, social, economic and political.

The first promise the Constitution makes, before liberty and before equality.

What technology can doJustice that can be seen: what was filed, what was ordered, and what comes next.

  • Article 14

Equality before the law or the equal protection of the laws.

Equal before the law means equal in what each person may know of their own case.

What technology can doA record shown to one person can be shown to every person, at no extra cost.

  • Article 21

No person shall be deprived of his life or personal liberty except according to procedure established by law.

The Supreme Court has read this to make access to justice a fundamental right (Anita Kushwaha v. Pushap Sudan, 2016).

What technology can doAccess begins with understanding: the law said in plain words, in the reader’s own language.

  • Article 39A

Opportunities for securing justice are not denied to any citizen by reason of economic or other disabilities.

Distance, cost and language are such disabilities, for millions.

What technology can doSoftware can lift each of them for everyone at once, which no office ever could.

Technology, as a leveller

The law was always public. Now it can be in plain sight.

Court records, orders and dates have long been open in principle and out of reach in practice: behind a counter, a journey, a fee or a language. Technology closes that distance for everyone at once. Shown to one person, the law can as easily be shown to all.

  1. 01The same record, for the farmer and the firm.
  2. 02The same day, for the village and the city.
  3. 03The same right, whatever one can pay.
