How a matter runs while you are abroad

Most NRIs do not lose matters in India because the law is against them. They lose them because nobody appeared, nobody explained, and the file went quiet for two years. This is the process we hold ourselves to instead.

Frequently asked

Can you actually run my case if I never come to India? add

For the great majority of matters, yes. You execute a Power of Attorney in your country, we file and appear under it, and we apply at the outset for your personal appearance to be dispensed with. The one thing a Power of Attorney holder cannot do is give evidence about facts within your own personal knowledge, so where your testimony is genuinely required we first seek permission for examination by video conferencing, and only if the court insists do we plan a single consolidated visit.

What kinds of NRI matters do you take? add

Property disputes and illegal possession, succession and inheritance, Powers of Attorney, sale of property with the associated tax and repatriation, matrimonial matters including the recognition of foreign decrees, court representation generally, and business or investment work for NRIs putting money into India. All of it in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh.

Why a Chandigarh firm rather than a national NRI portal? add

Because your case will be decided in a specific court by a specific judge under state-specific revenue law, and that is where the outcome is actually determined. Our advocates are enrolled with the Bar Council of Punjab & Haryana and appear before these courts every week. Punjab and Haryana revenue records, the jamabandi and mutation system, and the Punjab & Haryana High Court are not a general subject for us.

How do I keep track of what is happening? add

Through a client portal rather than through phone calls you have to chase. Your matter, the next date, the orders passed and the documents filed are visible to you, and we record what happened after each effective hearing. Losing sight of the file is the single most common complaint NRIs have about previous counsel in India, and the platform exists specifically to remove it.

Can I inherit or buy agricultural land in Punjab as an NRI or OCI? add

Inherit, yes. Buy, no. Under FEMA a non-resident Indian or OCI cardholder may not purchase agricultural land, plantation property or a farmhouse in India, but may acquire such property by inheritance. Residential and commercial property may be both purchased and inherited.

What languages do you work in? add

English, Hindi and Punjabi. That matters more than it sounds: advice to you may be in English while the dealings with relatives, revenue officials and witnesses in Punjab happen in Punjabi.

Tell us what is happening back home.

Send us the facts and an enrolled advocate will review the matter and come back to you with a written view on where you stand — in your time zone, not ours.
